ABOUT THE SAMFORD REGION
Samford Valley was occupied by the Garumngar clan of the Jinibara people who spoke the Waka language and named the area “Kupidabin.” European settlement began in 1855 with the first land auction on February 1st of that year. The secluded valley, surrounded by steep mountain ranges yet blessed with reliable water from multiple creeks feeding into the South Pine River, proved ideal for small-scale farming despite difficult access.
Queensland’s Former Banana Capital Early settlers from the 1860s-1890s harvested cedar and hoop pine timber from the Samford Range and Mount Nebo, using cleared land for dairying, bananas, fruit, and small crops. The 1918 opening of the Samford Valley Railway Station transformed the district, with businesses relocating to Main Street near the station. During 1926-1927, Samford Railway Station consigned more bananas to southern markets than any other railway station in Queensland—earning the district recognition as the state’s banana capital. Main Street lined with fruit farmers eagerly loading freight became a defining image of the era.
Disaster and Transformation The banana bunchy top virus devastated the industry in the early 1930s, forcing government-ordered destruction of all plantations. The district pivoted to expanded dairy operations, particularly after electricity arrived in 1937, enabling milking machines and larger herds. The 1947 Camp Mountain rail disaster and increasing motor transport led to the railway closure in 1955. Farm subdivision for housing began in the 1960s, transforming Samford into a desirable rural-residential address. The last commercial dairy farm closed in 2001, and the CSIRO pastoral research farm closed in 2002.
