The Toogoolawah district was originally known as Cressbrook after the historic Cressbrook Station operated by James Henry McConnel, who was the “first man into the Brisbane Valley” in 1841. The town took its present name from its railway station, named in November 1903 using “Tugulawah”—the name of the McConnel family’s residence at Bulimba, Brisbane. Toogoolawah derives from Aboriginal words meaning “dhoo” (tree) and “goo/lawa” (crescent shaped or bent like a crescent moon), likely referring to a deformed tree on the original Bulimba site.

Queensland’s Historic Condensed Milk Capital Throughout the 1880s, resumptions of Cressbrook Station for closer settlement brought a considerable population engaged in dairying and mixed farming. In 1898, the McConnels financed a condensed milk factory at Cressbrook, later known as the Toogoolawah factory. The operation proved so successful that Nestlé was obliged to acquire it in 1907 to re-enter the Australian market. Nestlé’s acquisition was followed by similar purchases at Colinton and Lowood, and in 1921, processing was centralized at Toogoolawah, giving Nestlé a monopoly over condensed milk in the Brisbane Valley while also supplying cream to the Esk butter factory.

Railway Town and Regional Hub The arrival of the railway in 1904 transformed Toogoolawah into a vital junction for the Brisbane Valley, serving as an essential stop along the historic route connecting Brisbane to the region’s interior. By the 1920s, Toogoolawah’s population exceeded 1,000 people, with three hotels, the Brisbane Valley Advertiser office, two sawmills, numerous tradespeople, and a range of shops and storekeepers. The Alexandra Hall (school of arts) was completed with support from a progress association, and electricity was reticulated from the Nestlé factory. A Rural School teaching trades and agriculture opened in 1928.

Modern Toogoolawah Today’s Toogoolawah supports diverse agriculture including beef cattle operations, vegetable growing (the area along with nearby Mount Beppo is excellent for vegetables on fertile slopes), mixed farming, and an expanding rural-residential community. Land resumptions for Wivenhoe Dam in the 1970s were financially beneficial to many dairy farmers (some of whom moved into town), though the resumptions took some of the best agricultural land. The town now offers a rural/residential lifestyle with recreational attractions at Somerset and Wivenhoe Dams, while maintaining its agricultural heritage through the Toogoolawah Show, monthly Railway Markets along the Brisbane Valley Rail Trail, and the historic Condensery Art Gallery (formerly Nestlé’s condensed milk packing shed). The annual Campdraft and Legends of Beef events continue the town’s strong connection to livestock industries.
