The Nanango area has been home to the Wakka Wakka (also Waka Waka) people for thousands of years, who served as custodians of the upper Burnett River catchment. The land held profound importance as a gateway to the bunya nut festivals, where Aboriginal people traveled from as far as the Clarence River in New South Wales and the Maranoa River to feast on bunya nuts. The name “Nanango” derives from the Wakka Wakka word “nunangi,” meaning either “large watering hole” or named after a local Aboriginal leader at the time of settlement.

Queensland’s Fourth-Oldest Town European settlement began in 1847 when John Borthwick and William Oliver from Ipswich took up pastures for sheep farming. Oliver selected more than 500 square kilometers comprising four blocks—Coolabunia, Booie, Broadwater, and Nanango. The first commercial establishment was Goode’s Inn, founded by prospector Jacob Goode in July 1848 to serve travelers from Brisbane and Ipswich. The inn quickly became the meeting place for early residents and the town developed around it. On this basis—first establishment of commercial premises—Nanango claims to be Queensland’s fourth-oldest town, following Ipswich (then called Limestone), Drayton, and Maryborough.

Gold, Dairy, and Development Discovery of gold at the Seven Mile Diggings in 1867 sparked a small rush, bringing 700 miners (many Chinese) to the district, though yields were meager and the field short-lived. The real foundation of Nanango’s economy came through closer settlement. Farm selections began in 1877, and by the early 1900s the district supported thriving dairy operations. The substantial butter factory built in 1906 processed dairy from surrounding farms and later supplied the town’s initial electricity. The extension of the railway from Kingaroy to Nanango in November 1911 proved transformative, connecting the town to broader markets for timber, agriculture, and dairy products, boosting population to approximately 1,500 residents.

Modern South Burnett Hub Today’s Nanango supports diverse agriculture including beef cattle (the region’s main agricultural industry), pork production, cereal and legume crops, and timber harvesting. The nearby Tarong Power Station (completed in 1986) supplies up to a quarter of Queensland’s electricity. Nanango attracts visitors with its monthly Country Markets—recognized as the largest rural markets in South East Queensland with over 400 stalls—the annual Nanango Show (established 1900), Medieval Fest, Country Music Muster, and preserved heritage including Ringsfield House, the historic Butter Factory Building, and the 1937 Court House. The town’s central business district features chainsaw sculptures and murals reflecting its timber-felling, farming, and mining heritage.
