Where you put a gate matters as much as which gate you choose. A well-chosen gate in the wrong position creates bottlenecks, blind spots, and handler hazards. Here’s what good gate placement looks like in practice.

Gate placement is one of those yard design details that experienced cattle handlers understand instinctively but rarely explain explicitly. The difference between a yard that flows well and one that causes constant frustration often comes down not to what equipment is in it, but where that equipment sits relative to the cattle’s natural movement patterns and the handler’s working positions.

Gates Should Open Away From the Direction of Cattle Movement

This is the most fundamental gate placement rule and the one most frequently violated in yards that have been built without careful thought. A gate positioned so that it opens into the path of approaching cattle creates a bottleneck every time it is operated. Cattle approaching a gate that is swinging open in front of them will hesitate, stop, or push into the gate, slowing the whole process and creating a physical hazard.

Gates at pen entry and exit points should be hinged and positioned so that opening the gate moves it out of the approach path of the cattle, not into it. In a well-designed pen, the gate opens against the fence line or into a corner, leaving the entire opening clear for cattle to move through freely.

Race Gates Need to Be Handler-Accessible Without Entering the Race

Any gate in or adjacent to the race should be operable by the handler from outside the race. A gate that requires the handler to step into the race to operate it puts that person in the most dangerous position in the yard, standing between contained cattle and the gate they are trying to open or close.

Sliding gates in the race should have their operating handle positioned so the handler can reach it from over the top rail or from the side of the race without stepping through. Sliding cattle gates in our range are designed with this working position in mind, with handles and release mechanisms that suit outside-race operation.

Forcing Yard Gate Position Determines How the Yard Flows

The gate between the forcing yard and the race entry is one of the most important in the entire yard, because its position determines how efficiently cattle transition from the mob to the single-file race. A gate positioned at the wrong point in the forcing yard’s circumference creates a dead zone where cattle bunch without pressure to move through the opening.

In a curved or circular forcing yard, the gate to the race should be positioned at the narrowest point of the funnel, where cattle naturally converge as the space tightens. This positioning means that the gate opening aligns with where cattle are already heading, and the transition from the forcing yard into the race happens with minimal resistance. A gate positioned even slightly off this optimal point can significantly reduce how naturally cattle flow through the system.

Man Gates: Spacing and Position

Man gates, also called escape gates or step-through panels, are the safety infrastructure that too many yard builders treat as an afterthought. Their position needs to be thought through systematically, not scattered around the yard at random.

The standard recommendation is a man gate every 10 to 15 metres along any race, with an additional gate at the crush entry and one at the crush exit. The handler at the crush needs to be able to reach a man gate in two steps or fewer from any position they regularly occupy. A man gate that requires five steps to reach is not useful in the moment it is needed, which is when a large animal is moving unpredictably at close range.

Drafting Gate Placement at the Crush Exit

A drafting gate placed too far from the crush exit gives sorted animals time and space to bunch back toward the crush rather than moving away from it. Ideally the drafting gate sits immediately after the crush exit, within two to three metres, so that each animal is directed into its destination pen while it is still moving forward under its own momentum from the crush.

3-Way Drafting Gate positioned at this point, operable from the same position as the crush, means that sorting is completed as part of the processing action rather than as a separate step after the fact. This alone can save significant time on a full processing day.
