Cattle grid installation looks deceptively simple. The grid itself is a steel structure that sits over a pit, and the concept of digging a hole and dropping a grid into it sounds straightforward. But the details of how that pit is prepared, how the grid is supported and positioned, and how drainage is managed around the installation determine whether the grid works reliably for twenty years or starts causing problems within the first few seasons.

This guide covers the installation considerations that experienced contractors take for granted but that are genuinely important for anyone planning a first installation or supervising one on their property.

Check With Your Local Council First

Before any work starts, check with your local council about any requirements or approvals that apply to cattle grid installation on your property. Requirements vary across Queensland’s local government areas. Some councils have specific standards for grid dimensions, load ratings, and drainage that must be met. On properties adjoining or accessed from public roads, the road authority may have requirements that apply to any structure at the road boundary. Addressing this before you start avoids the possibility of having to modify or remove work that does not comply with local requirements.

Sizing the Excavation Correctly

The pit beneath the grid needs to be wide enough and deep enough to perform two functions: preventing cattle from stepping across or into the void if they approach the grid edge, and providing enough depth that a hoof that does drop between the bars cannot reach the bottom of the pit. The perceived depth of the void is part of what deters cattle from attempting to cross.

The excavation should match the outer dimensions of the grid with some additional margin on each side for the support structure and wing walls. Depth should typically be a minimum of 300 to 400 millimetres below the base of the grid rails, with additional depth depending on your soil type and drainage requirements. In areas with high clay content or poor natural drainage, more depth is needed to prevent the pit from filling with water and reducing the apparent void depth that deters cattle.

Drainage Is the Most Important Installation Detail

A cattle grid with poor drainage is a grid that will fail ahead of schedule. Water that pools in the pit and cannot escape undermines the support structure, causes the grid to settle unevenly, accelerates corrosion of the base frame, and in cold conditions can create ice that lifts the grid out of position. In Queensland this last concern is less relevant, but water pooling and corrosion absolutely are.

The base of the excavation should slope to a drainage point on the downhill side of the crossing. Agricultural drainage pipe laid in gravel beneath the pit floor carries water away from the installation point. Do not skip this step even on properties that seem to drain well naturally. The concentrated surface runoff from a vehicle track converges at the grid location and can be significantly higher than the natural drainage rate of the surrounding soil.

Wing Walls and Fence Integration

The grid’s effectiveness depends entirely on the fence lines on each side connecting cleanly to the grid ends without any gap that cattle could walk around. Wing walls or headwalls on each side of the pit provide the connection points for the adjacent fencing and also prevent soil from slumping into the pit from the sides over time.

Wing walls are typically constructed from concrete, treated timber, or steel, depending on your preference and the load conditions at the crossing. The critical requirement is that they are built to sit flush with the ends of the grid and connect positively to the fence lines on each side. A gap of even 200 to 300 millimetres between the grid end and the fence line is enough for determined cattle to exploit over time.

Grid Level and Vehicle Approach

The grid surface should sit level with, or very slightly above, the road surface on both sides. A grid that sits below road level creates a step-down that vehicles hit at speed, which causes structural loading well above the grid’s design specification and can damage both the vehicle and the grid over time. A grid that sits above road level by more than 20 to 30 millimetres creates a bump that is also hard on vehicles and discourages use of the crossing.

The vehicle approach on both sides of the grid should be built up and compacted to provide a stable transition between the road surface and the grid. Loose gravel or unstable fill immediately before the grid will shift over time, creating the step condition you are trying to avoid.
