Drafting areas need careful thought too. Eliminate Dead Ends and Blind Corners
One of the quickest ways to cause stress in a yard is to design a space where cattle feel trapped. Dead ends trigger panic, and once cattle start pushing back, the whole mob can turn, creating real risks for handlers.
Wherever possible, round off corners in your forcing yards and holding pens. Cattle tend to push into corners, and sharp 90-degree angles give them a place to bunch up rather than flow through. Curved corner panels or angled fencing can solve this without a complete redesign.
Solid sheeting on forcing yards and races is worth considering too. When cattle can see movement or shadows outside the yard, they get distracted and anxious. Solid-sided panels block visual distractions and help cattle focus on moving forward. People Flow Matters as Much as Cattle Flow
A yard that moves cattle well but requires handlers to constantly climb over rails or walk long distances between gates is still a design problem. Good yard layout keeps footsteps to a minimum and separates human walkways from stock alleys as much as possible.
Think about where your gates are positioned and which way they swing. Gates should open into the yard where the cattle are moving, giving you control without putting you in harm’s way. Latches need to be easy to operate quickly, especially when you are working alone or with a small crew.
