Ground feeding hay looks like the cheaper option. But when you account for spoilage, wastage, and the hidden health costs that come with it, a proper round hay feeder pays for itself surprisingly quickly. Here’s how the numbers actually work out.

Dropping a hay bale directly on the ground is the path of least resistance when you are feeding cattle, and plenty of Queensland producers do it that way, at least for a while. The immediate appeal is obvious. No equipment to set up, no feeder to move, no cleaning required. Just cut the net wrap, spread the bale, and move on.

The problem is that ground feeding is expensive in ways that don’t show up as a single line item on the farm budget. The costs are distributed across hay wastage, health treatment costs, and the compounding effect of poor paddock management around feeding areas. When you add them up, a quality round hay feeder pays for itself in most operations within a single feeding season.

The Wastage Problem

Research into hay feeding methods consistently shows that ground feeding results in significantly higher hay wastage than feeder-based alternatives. Cattle trampling hay into the ground, soiling it with manure and urine, and lying on bales rather than eating them all contribute to wastage levels that most producers underestimate when they are watching it happen gradually rather than measuring it systematically.

Wastage estimates for uncontrolled ground feeding range from 20 to 45 percent of the hay delivered, depending on cattle density, ground conditions, and how the bale is placed. At current hay prices in Queensland, that wastage figure represents a real cost that accrues with every bale you feed. A round hay feeder that keeps hay elevated and contained reduces wastage to typically five to fifteen percent, which means significantly more of every bale you purchase actually goes into your cattle rather than into the ground.

The Health Costs of Ground Feeding

Cattle eating hay from the ground ingest soil and manure with every mouthful, particularly as the bale deteriorates and cattle dig through the outer layers to reach cleaner hay underneath. Soil ingestion contributes to sand colic in horses and can increase the parasite burden in cattle by exposing them to larvae concentrated in the manure contaminating the feeding area.

The feeding area itself degrades quickly with ground feeding. Cattle stand and move around the bale while eating, and in Queensland’s wet season the concentrated traffic around a ground-fed bale creates a mud patch that stays problematic long after the hay is gone. Multiple ground feeding points across a paddock create multiple degraded patches that accumulate over a season into significant pasture damage.

How a Round Hay Feeder Changes the Equation

A round hay feeder elevates the bale and contains it so cattle can eat from the sides without standing on or lying in the hay. One of the practical advantages of a round hay feeder over fixed feeding infrastructure is that it can be relocated. If you are feeding cattle in a paddock over an extended period, moving the feeder every few days distributes the traffic impact across a larger area rather than concentrating it at a single point. This is considerably better for pasture recovery than having a permanent ground feeding site that becomes a compacted, muddy bare patch.

The Investment Calculation
