Many Queensland cattle farmers handle their herd with minimal help, and often alone. A yard designed for a two or three-person crew becomes genuinely dangerous when one person is trying to manage all the positions. This guide covers the design principles that make solo handling safe and practical.

There is an enormous difference between a yard that can be worked by one person and a yard that was designed for a team but is being operated by one person. The second situation is one of the most common causes of cattle handling injuries on Queensland properties. When you are trying to cover multiple positions simultaneously, cattle move into gaps, gates swing open that should be closed, and you end up in positions relative to the animals that no one would deliberately choose.

Designing or adapting your yard specifically for solo operation is one of the most worthwhile investments a small to mid-size producer can make. The changes are often not expensive, but they require thinking through the workflow carefully before making decisions about layout and equipment.

The Core Principle: Minimise Position Changes

The fundamental challenge of solo handling is that traditional yard designs assume multiple handlers in different positions simultaneously. One person at the forcing yard gate, one at the race entry, one at the crush. When you are working alone, every time you need to move from one position to another, the system is temporarily uncontrolled.

Solo yard design minimises the number of position changes required. Ideally, a well-designed solo yard allows you to move cattle from the forcing yard into the race, fill the race, work the crush, and draft the exit without having to walk more than a few metres during normal operation. Every extra step you take is an opportunity for something to go wrong.

 

The Forcing Yard: Self-Managing Design

A curved or circular forcing yard works better for solo handling than a square one, because cattle in a curved yard tend to move continuously in one direction rather than bunching at corners. A well-designed circular forcing yard with a self-closing gate can be set up so cattle move into the race largely under their own momentum once the gate is opened from the race entry end.

The forcing yard gate itself should be operable from the race side if possible. This means you can open the forcing yard from your position at the race entry without having to walk around the yard, which keeps you at the correct position to manage the flow into the race.

The Race: Length and Visibility

A longer race is generally better for solo handling because it gives you a buffer of cattle already in the race and ready to process. When the race holds eight to ten animals, you can work the crush through several animals before needing to refill from the forcing yard. A short race means constant trips back to the forcing yard to move more cattle forward, which is time-consuming and increases the number of times you are away from the crush position.

Visibility along the race from the crush position is also important for solo handling. You need to be able to see how full the race is from where you are working. If the race curves in a way that blocks your view, you are working blind about how much time you have before the race empties and you need to refill it.

The Crush: Controls You Can Manage From One Position

For solo handling, the crush controls need to be centrally accessible from a single standing position. Head bail release, side panel operation, foot pedals, and rope releases should all be reachable without moving away from the animal. A crush that requires you to move to different sides of the animal to operate different mechanisms is not designed for solo use.

The Exit and Drafting Area

After the crush, you need the exit system to work without requiring you to be in two places at once. A 3-way drafting gate that you can operate from the crush position, or one that is positioned close enough that moving to it does not leave the crush unattended for more than a second or two, is ideal for solo operation.

The exit race should direct cattle away from you and into a holding pen without requiring your physical presence to guide them. Cattle that exit the crush and move straight toward you create a hazard. The exit should be designed so cattle naturally move away from the work area under their own direction.

Safety Margins for Solo Work

Solo handling requires more conservative safety margins than team handling. The escape routes in your yard design are not optional. There should be a safe exit point from the crush area, the race, and the forcing yard that you can reach in two steps or less from any position you regularly occupy. Man gates or step-through panels at regular intervals along the race are not just conveniences. They are genuine safety infrastructure.
